Hi, cool dudes! What is up? It is time now for music.
ESSENTIAL DOWNLOADIN’: Project X2
I forgot this one last time! Shame on me! This eclectic interpretation of the music of Mega Man 2 is – and you’ll forgive me if my enthusiasm leads me into hyperbole – pretty nice! There are beepy noises and rocking noises and mellow rhythms and funky rhythms. It’s all over the place, and yet, it isn’t – it’s coherent and self-contained. Think of it as a travel guide to music! Better yet, don’t think about it at all – just download it and GET YOUR FUN ON.
OC REMIX ROUNDUP
Quite a number of new tunes have appeared at OverClocked Remix in the past month and a bit. Here are some!
BogusRed – Chrono Trigger – Gale of Ages
Sentimental solo piano arrangements are a dime a dozen on OCR these days, but this one stands out by winding up before the three minute mark, instead of wanking on forever. Thank you, BogusRed, for allowing me to simply select ‘repeat track’ if I want your music to go on three times longer than is necessary.
AeroZ – Final Fantasy V – Wicked n’ Floating
You know the weird sort-of-music that accompanies microscopic organisms doing things in science class videos from the 1970s? All sort of, “BYOOOOoooooo. Weedly-weedly-weedly-weedly-weedly-weeoooooo.” Well imagine that, but all awesomed up with WIKKID BEATS. That’s this piece, and I am digging it like the grave of a man who I just realised was buried with a piece of evidence that directly links me with a series of ghastly crimes, and I have also realised that the police inspector will soon realise the same thing!
The melody doesn’t really go anywhere, so the piece could stand to be a bit shorter, but it’s not a big problem compared to the peril I face if I am discovered. I must not be prevented from completing the experiment!
Pot Hocket – Final Fantasy VII – Daydreaming Again
Those sentimental piano arrangements I mentioned? This is one of them, except it’s acoustic guitar instead of piano. I’m trying to decide which is the more namby-pamby instrument, but it’s hard to think critically with these gentle harmonies soothing me.
Another Soundscape – Jade Cocoon – People Made of Stone
Every other piece of music on OCR these days is a self-indulgent, eight minute long ‘atmosphere’ piece, with at least 90 seconds devoted to the sound of waves breaking or sparrows building nests or frogs thinking or another, similarly enrapturing thing. So this piece, I like for three reasons:
1) It cuts the bullshit and is four minutes long.
2) It’s really good.
3) The artist’s self-aware, apologetic name. I like the cut of your jib, Another Soundscape. I should like to borrow it for an exhibition of jibs for which I have the pleasure of acting as curator.
AeroZ, Tepid – Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Lane Avenue
You can always rely on Sonic arrangements to bring the smooth grooves. This music is what it would be like to go into space, but it’s not like a big deal or anything – you’re all cool about it, like, “Hey baby. Yeah, I’m just chillin’. Yeah, I’m in space. What’s up with you?” (You are on the phone I guess.)
Cons: Carries on a bit. (You should assume that anything downloaded from OCR will carry on a bit.)
Rayza – Top Gear 2 – Rolling Start
Do I like this, or is it just raver crap? I can’t decide! Download it and see what you think.
Booby Prize!!
Ho ho, yes! Did you know we have a booby prize? Well we do today, because I need to award it to...
Evan Arnett – The Legend of Zelda – Legend of Zelda Overture
This otherwise competent orchestral arrangement is made intolerable by the fact that it bloody fucking doesn’t go anywhere! It is 90 percent build-up – just teasing, teasing, teasing – and when the climax finally arrives, it’s so drab you might not even notice it. Call it an ‘overture’ if you like, Evan Arnett – I call it feeble.
A Blants from the Pants!!
We’re doing this today, too!
Marc Star – Street Fighter Alpha 2 – Kasugano (BootyMix)
This funky-ass arrangement from back in 2004 is the smoothin’est, groovin’est thing you’ll hear this week, plus it has Sakura grunting all the way through it, which is always excellent. If it were up to me, the national anthem would be grunting. Imagine how it would improve ANZAC Day. Anyway, download this tune or I’ll kill myself.
See you next time! |
