Description

ColourWise is a colour-themed puzzle game. The idea is to change your little block to the correct colour, and get it to the end of the maze. There are tonnes of puzzles, and a puzzle editor too, making it a pretty complete package.

Author’s explanation

ColourWise is a puzzle about colours (better, colour-mixing). It comes with a tutorial, 73 levels of colour melting extravaganza, many cutscenes with cartoonesque characters and a level editor to create your own quest!

“As you will see the story, the mechanics and even the characters themselves are all revolving around colours, so this game is dead centre on the theme.”

Dan’s comments

I like ColourWise: it’s an inventive, highly polished, and thoroughly clever game that perfectly embodies the theme of this year’s competition. It’s also kind of boring. I know that sounds nasty, but I honestly can’t think of any other way to describe it. When I play ColourWise, I can see its strengths, and I appreciate why other people might find it enjoyable, but I simply can’t get into it. I dunno why exactly. Maybe I’m tired of isometric puzzle games, or maybe the faux-reggae background music triggers some kind of powerful sedative effect in the depths of my subconscious. In any case, I know that ColourWise is a good game – I just don’t find it fun. That doesn’t mean that you won’t.

Patrick’s comments

Francesco had the lucky advantage of having a colour-themed game already in progress – in fact, nearing completion – when we announced the competition, and we’ve taken that into account in the judging. With that said – wow, ColourWise is amazing! A lot, lot, lot of work has gone into this puzzle game: the presentation is impeccable; there are even comic strip ‘cut scenes’. And rather wonderfully, it comes with an editor, so you can create your own puzzles and share them, I believe, on the ColourWise website. If ColourWise gains a following – and it well might, since it’s excellent – it could be one of those games that people play for years and years.

The only problem I have with ColourWise is that regardless of its excellence, it’s not compelling. I enjoy playing it, but I don’t think about it when I’m not; it’s clever but not addictive. Similarly, the pleasant, inoffensive presentation rests on that fine line between ‘broad appeal’ and ‘no appeal’. But this is probably an issue of personal taste: Yours may be different from mine, and you should certainly download ColourWise and find out.
