Description
Space Safari is a steampunk-ish platform game starring a colonialist adventurer with a grappling hook and a multicoloured laser gun, that he uses to rob aliens of their space gold, for the love of a beautiful princess.
Author’s explanation
“Space Safari is a game where you travel to different levels, kill strange creatures, and take their space gold. To kill these creatures you must match the color of the creature with the lasers you shoot at it. Some creatures are a mix of Red, Green, and Blue and thus require a mixture of lasers to kill them. Thus it requires the player to use their knowledge of the color spectrum to defeat the enemy. Also the game makes use of a Steam Punk/Victorian motif that goes well with eegra.”

There’s a lot to like about Space Safari, but it’s all in the presentation; there’s not a lot of actual game here. If the levels were designed, rather than randomly generated, it would be several times better. Still – for what it is, Space Safari is well worth a look: There are amusing-looking characters who move amusingly, and amusing voice acting, and general amusement. Space Safari is technically and artistically solid – but unfortunately, that’s all it is.

I want to like Space Safari, but there’s just... there’s not much GAME there. There’s a great engine, some wonderful graphics and animation, a beautiful and funny introduction, and a few really good ideas, but the actual game part feels more like a tech demo than anything else. Don’t get me wrong: I like swinging around space and shooting things with a laser gun, but I’d like it a lot more it the levels were specifically designed to accommodate and take advantage of those mechanics. So yes, I hope you update Space Safari, or at least make the engine available for others to play with, because it’s an excellent piece of tech just waiting to be turned into a great game.
