Feature: Menus - A Celebration

MENU THE FIRST - AQUARIA

A masterpiece of indie artistry, Aquaria’s menu screen perfectly evokes the serenity and solitude of being a British mermaid trapped in a big blue crystal at the bottom of the sea. Notice how the menu options are seamlessly blended with the scenery, almost as though somebody – perhaps Bioshock’s Ayn Rand – carved them out the rocks with the help of a friendly swordfish.

Speaking of Bioshock...

MENU THE SECOND - KEN "RANDROID" LEVINE'S BIOSHOCK

Like the game to which it belongs, this menu screen is ponderous and challenging. It confronts us with its deep moral dilemmas, making us re-evaluate our most cherished beliefs. For example, what does it mean to ‘continue’ when life is really just a series of unconnected absurdities devoid of ultimate purpose? What do ‘options’ matter while children starve in Africa? Also, why has this stupid game crashed to the desktop when all I did was move the fucking mouse a little bit to the left? These are just a few of the questions posed by this wonderful menu screen. Dare you answer them?
