The advent of Final Fantasy VII was a new beginning for videogames; a rebirth. Squaresoft’s 3D masterpiece was so revolutionary; so unlike anything seen or imagined before; and its fantastical world so vivid, so real and so beautiful, that seeing a colour or shape somewhere in that world was like seeing that colour or shape for the very first time. Final Fantasy VII is not just the orangest, but the bluest and the yellowest – and the squarest and the trianglest, and the lightest and the darkest. It is, simply, the ‘est’.

And do we gamers really think of Final Fantasy VII as just a game? For most of us, Final Fantasy VII was a childhood friend – a friend we played with every day after school. The time we spent together; the experiences and emotions we shared... Final Fantasy VII might not have been a real person, but it was surely a fictional one: a character.
