Default World of Warcraft

I have a long history of not playing MMO's. A history which is entirely concurrent with the history of the MMO itself.

When Ultima Online launched in Australia I actually saved up and bought it, more for the metal thingy and the cloth map that came with that launch set than anything else. I figured that, someday, I would have a computer with an internet connection. Fast forward to December 2006, when I bought a wireless router and had my first ever computer that I owned myself with internet access. Strangely, I could no longer be fucked with installing the launch copy of UO which I still have here next to my computer.

A guy at work was trying to convince me to get into World of Warcraft, another MMO which probably represents today what Ultima Online represented back then: times 9 million but it's a natural inflation. I had just started a 4-day-per-week course and worked the other 3 days each week, for 6 months. Why I, in the midst of this marathon (6 months with nearly no me-time at all) decided to buy WoW and try it out I will never know.

At my friend's suggestion, I chose a BullHeadMan Shaman guy, which turned out to be right up my alley - I liked the "Minotaurs are really Native Americans" thing it had going. I didn't understand the economy at first - I asked my friend to give me some gold (thinking that, like other rpgs, there was just one currency) and I thought he was a bit tight giving me only 5 gold. I bought everything that was possible for me to buy with it and gave him 4 gold back. He was saving for a horse, which was not in fact a horse but some kind of gigantic flying lizard but in effect was a horse.

Because of my schedule and utterly predicable exhaustion, at the end of 30days I found I had played for about a total of 9 hours, or however long it takes to get a bull-man to level 10. Realising that WoW was not to be, I sold all my weapons and clothes, mailed the proceeds to my online friends, then ran into the woods to be torn apart by wild boars. I then ran my ghost into the middle of a lake, sat down in the middle, and logged out - forever. I entered this world with nothing and left it with $30 less than nothing.

That guy from work turned into a jerk and then got someone pregnant and moved away. But now old friends, from the distant past, probably from about when I bought Ultima Online, have reemerged to tell me about this great game they are playing. World of Warcraft. My wireless router, which has been out of action for 3 months, is now back. I once again have my own computer, and Harvey Norman were selling the Battle Chest for just $48. I haven't installed the thing yet, my friends are such nOObs they don't even know what shards they are on. But it seems likely that I am about to re-enter the world.

The World... of Warcraft!

So here's a thread about that, cunts. Can I say cunts?

Bit hard to have a discussion about World of Warcraft without saying 'cunts'.

I played World of Warcraft for two weeks on one of those demo disks. I didn't get very far (around level 10 I think) but it was pretty fun. The standout for me was falling off the starting island (I played a night elf for some unknown reason) as a ghost and ended up lost in the ocean. I was determined to make my way back but I never did.

That's what many people have said about the game as a whole, as it pertains to the living, which is one of the reasons I've probably avoided it so long.

I wanted to be a Tauren Shaman again but my stupid friend is an Alliance something. Maybe a Drenny Shaman then. I can't spell Drenny btw.

I haven't even installed it yet. Anyone who has ever done this before will know why you need to say "cunts' in any WOW thread. I'll give you a hint: there's a patch.

moar like over 9000 patches, amirite?

Yeah, I got a troll shaman up to 20 and stopped caring. City of Heroes is better for PvE; EVE Online is better for PVP; I'm told Everquest 2 does crafting far better.

WoW is basically for those who like their MMOs generic.

I hear that Fury is really great, worth investing in.

Here's a technical question about WOW (which should draw out the true users) I have Burning Crusade and my friend doesn't. We can still meet up though, right? Not in Outland obviously.

I made a joke today about how everyone in Outland is openly gay. There are two new character classes: Butt Elves and... and... (tries to think of something based off "Dranei"...)

DLesbos...

Do have any idea what kind of stink would be raised if players couldn't?

Seriously, Blizzard would be lynched for being money-grubbers. The company figured at 7 million users per month, they don't need to FORCE Burning Crusade sales...

I started installing WoW at 7pm. it is now 12:30pm and it is finished. I think, anyway. Maybe if I try and start it a fourth patch will start.

Hmm - Warcraft World II: The Patchening.

Hmm, 7 million times US$15 per month. That's $1 260 000 000 per year. One and a quarter billion dollars. No wonder Auran bet the farm.
