Default Space Safari

I have a game idea for this shindig. Right now it consists of mostly running around a randomly generated map swinging from stuff with your grappling hook.

I like the whole steam punk laser/ pulp adventure theme so I am going to try and make the plot along those lines. I don't even have a real title so I am calling this game Space Safari until I flesh out the plot a little more.

Color will play an important part in how you fight the enemies in the level. However since I have not gotten around to making enemies yet you can't really tell how I am implementing the main theme.
[edit]
I have submitted my entry. Unfortunately it is too big for my domain's host so I have had to host it through zShare. It is 8 megs due to all the cut scenes and voice acting.

It is freeware and I don't plan on working on it anymore unless there are terrible bugs that I missed. I hope you have as much fun playing the game as I had making it.

Work in progrss demos will be posted here
Alpha Build: http://http://www.monkeydev.com/swing/spacesafari.zip

What I have done so far:
random level generator
level to player collision detection
player movement physics
grappling hook physics
player sprites
level tile sprites
player weapon bullets
special tile/player interaction (bouncy tiles, burning lava, slippery ice, ect)
parallax scrolling background
tile borders ( so the tiles look less squared off )
enemy spawning
enemy movement
bullet to enemy collision detection
enemy sprites
player to enemy collision detection
story dialog window
story text
level swapping condition.
level parameter creation (play balancing).
sound effects
awesome plot with voice acting
play testing for ballance issues
tutorial level (sort of)
final boss level
final boss

What I need to do:
sleep

What I would like to do if I have time:
purchasable upgrades
visible modification to player after upgrade is bought
enemy projectile weapons

Now for screen shots:

If you look closely you will see the character's head and arms following the mouse cursor or grappeling hook. It took me quite a while to get that math right in the code.

Thanks, I have been planning a grappling hook game for a while. But this is the first time I have sat down and coded my idea into reality. I am trying not to be too ambitious but 1.5 months is a lot of time to work with. I feel obligated to put forth something better than I would do for a month or week long competition.

Cool character! Is he fully animated? That looks like a lot of work. I hope you'll have time to get your backgrounds up to the same standard.

The arms and head are pivot animated to always face certain points in space dependng on user controll. The torsoe and body have three frames in the air, a six frame running animation, and a standing frame. As for the background I am going for a star field.

New screen shot:

I have added a randomly generated starfield that moves at 1/2 the screen speed to give a sense of motion.
Also I have added lazers and charging stations.
Still no enemies yet, sorry

Oh and rag doll physics were not part of the plan.

He is wearing clown shoes. I was going for the cartooney look in this game.
