Here's something a friend written to me about the hype behind the Halo series, you'll find it very interesting.

"I think theirs a lot of hype about the hype. Everyone is aware of halo, and everyone is aware that it has been given a lot of acclaim, and hence assumes there is the rabid fan base of followers who love it mindlessly. This is a broad stereotype that we all love to poke fun at "the halo junky". I think alot of people laugh and mock these people not so much for the quality of the actual game, but more to be behind the joke. "ha those silly halo kids, yuck yuck yuck." It’s an inside joke, people are willing to say its over hyped, simply to give themselves a feeling of being in the know. So many people on this site say Halo is overhyped, how that can be if so many people are saying its over hyped. It's a hypocritical statement.
I like to think of it in terms of Hollywood movies. Some flicks like transformers, might not have had much expectation due to the director. On the other hand, a movie like speed racer has exceedingly high standards to live up to. I've seem reviews for speed racer and one critique stated "this is the worst movie of all time" or something like that. In retrospect, this is ridiculous. The wacaski "or however you spell their name" bros, have always spent a lot of time and energy in making their movie, I’m sure less interesting movies, B movies, so on and so forth, have much less cinematic quality, but they will inevitable be given a higher overall score then some, simple because they are B movies. Halo is a solid game. It's got a lot more to it then some games do. Is it worth the hype? Who knows, it still has it though and hence you are met with a group of people ready to rip on it.
I'd also like to go on the record that I enjoyed the hype train leading up to halo 3's release. To me that was half the fun. Seeing the lines, having a friend stay home "sick" to play the beta and then complaining the next day about its failure to work, seeing the sighs, it was a great celebratory atmosphere and it saddens me how few people appreciated that."
